Recently I've been concentrating on my colour prints on canvas, images which can be reproduced in sizes from A5 right up to A0 which come ready to hang, stretched on a spruce frame.
I've transformed my 'Two Proteas' image here from the original monochrome scratchboard using translucent inks, which I think really brings out the delicate structure of these handsome South African blooms. I'm also experimenting with transforming the backgrounds of some of my works from the original black to an eye-popping white. More about this soon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit my online gallery for more images of botanical works, animals and birds, historical buildings and places in Cape Town and beyond. From my perennially-popular image of Nelson Mandela, to my recent portrait of iconic Spike Lee, all have been a joy to create. I've also done family portraits as commission work, but up until now, none of my own family. Now, here's my first: my son Herschel and his lovely wife. We're all delighted by the way it's come out.
You can see more of my portraits here and if you would like me to create your very own family portrait, I'm accepting commissions at the moment. Please get in touch to discuss what you'd like. This image of the golden sun, bleeding into the inky ocean, is a scene from Camps Bay, which is located just south of the bustling city of Cape Town. The beautiful white sand beach faces west, looking out over the South Atlantic Ocean and behind it is the ribbon of mountains known as the Twelve Apostles. A peaceful place in the evening, beyond the posh seafood restaurants, mellow cafes and cocktail bars that characterise this prosperous suburb. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit my online gallery for more images of people and characters, historical buildings and places in Cape Town and beyond, botanical works, and images of animals and birds. Originally gifted to the then ruler of Lesotho, King Moshoeshoe I by a British man known only as "Mr Howell" in the late 19th century, these blankets quickly gained popularity in the Lesotho region. The way that Basotho men wear these traditional blankets is based on the traditional kaross, an animal skin cloak.
A variety of blankets are worn by the people of Lesotho to represent the different rites of passage in society. For example, the Moholobela is worn by young Sotho men in preparation of their transition to manhood. After the initiation ceremony, young men will don a different blanket known as the Lekhokolo, which confirms that they have reached adulthood. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit my online gallery for more images of people and characters, historical buildings and places in Cape Town and beyond, botanical works, and images of animals and birds. Third and final of my pomegranate images highlighting the jewel-like vibrancy of the deep red seeds which are brought out by the application of translucent inks.
Pomegranates have been known for their disease-fighting qualities since ancient times. The fruit, flowers, bark, roots and leaves of pomegranates contain chemicals which can be used to treat a number of diseases and conditions. Ancient cultures understood the health benefits of pomegranates and used them in remedies for digestive disorders, skin disorders, and intestinal parasites. Research today has revealed that pomegranates might contribute towards preventing serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Botanically-speaking, pomegranates are berries. True berries are fleshy fruits that come from a single flower with one ovary and typically have several seeds. Pomegranate fruit fall into this group. The dry outer covering (husk) of pomegranate fruit is made up of two layers: a hard outer layer called a epicarp and an inner, soft layer called a mesocarp. The inner mesocarp forms distinct, non-symmetrical chambers containing seeds with a fleshy covering (aril). It turns out that there are some interesting facts about this particular fruit too, starting with the origin of its botanical name. The genus name given to pomegranates (Punica) came from the Roman name for Carthage, an ancient city in Northern Africa. The Romans mistakenly assumed pomegranates derived from Africa, but in fact, pomegranates have a native range from North East Turkey to Afghanistan. The pomegranate fruit was also given a classical Latin name, Malum granatum, meaning "grainy apple".
