Jamia Mosque, Chiappini Street

This Shafee mosque was the first mosque which was specially granted land for a mosque site and hence is also known as Queen Victoria Mosque as patronage of the British Crown. It is the fourth mosque and is situated on the corner of Chiappini and Castle Streets adjacent to the disused stone quarry where the first Jumu-ah (Friday Congregational prayer) was read in South Africa in 1790. Established in 1850, it is the biggest mosque in Bo-Kaap and the fifth eldest in South Africa. The minaret was constructed in 1932 and later enlarged in 1914.

For more images of Bo-Kaap, take a look in the gallery.
All works are available as high quality prints on non-archival paper or on stretched canvas.

Bo-Kaap Museum - 71 Wale Street, Cape Town

The Bo-Kaap Museum is situated in the historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery. Operated by Iziko, the museum showcases local Islamic culture and heritage. It is one of a few remaining examples of the small “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) erected c1768 by Jan de Waal in the upper portion of Wale Street. The building was restored in 1975 by the City Engineer’s Department under the guidance of architects Munnik, Visser, Black, Fish & Partners.

One of the unique features of this early house is the curvilinear baroque gable. The original Cape Dutch teak windows, doors and double fanlight with radiating glazing bars and lantern were restored, as were the yellowwood floor and ceiling boards. A reinforced concrete roof slab was placed over the earlier fabric and covered in a lime cement to simulate the original covering of shell lime and seashells. Fittings that required replacement were patterned on old Cape Dutch examples.

For more of my images of this important historical area of Cape Town, pop over to the gallery.
