Bo-Kaap Museum, 71 Wale Street, Cape Town

This beautiful building is one of a few remaining examples of the small “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) erected in 1768 by Jan de Waal in the upper portion of Wale Street. Restored in 1975 by the City Engineer’s Department, one of the unique features of this early house is the curvilinear baroque gable.

The original Cape Dutch teak windows, doors and double fanlight with radiating glazing bars and lantern were restored, as were the yellowwood floor and ceiling boards. A reinforced concrete roof slab was placed over the earlier fabric and covered in a lime cement to simulate the original covering of shell lime and seashells. Fittings that required replacement were patterned on old Cape Dutch examples.

Church Square, Cape Town

Church Square, located in the corner of Spin and Parliament Streets, was one of the first areas of Cape Town to be developed. The square once functioned as a slave market connected to the Slave Lodge, built in 1679. In 1701 the Dutch Reformed Church, the Groote Kerk, which today is known as the Old Supreme Court, was erected on its southern side.

The square was a convenient place for slaves to wait for their masters while they attended church. They waited under the shade of a tree at the entrance to the square, close to where the carriages were kept.
The original tree which became known as the Slave Tree was cut down but has now been replaced by a similar one.

The square was declared a National Monument on 17 February 1961.
