Colour Transformation - Two Proteas

10/31/2021

Picture
Recently I've been concentrating on my colour prints on canvas, images which can be reproduced in sizes from A5 right up to A0 which come ready to hang, stretched on a spruce frame.

I've transformed my 'Two Proteas' image here from the original monochrome scratchboard using translucent inks, which I think really brings out the delicate structure of these handsome South African blooms.

I'm also experimenting with transforming the backgrounds of some of my works from the original black to an eye-popping white. More about this soon.

Family Portrait

Over the years I've done many portraits. It's a challenge that I enjoy, although not an easy one. From my perennially-popular image of Nelson Mandela, to my recent portrait of iconic Spike Lee, all have been a joy to create. I've also done family portraits as commission work, but up until now, none of my own family. Now, here's my first: my son Herschel and his lovely wife. We're all delighted by the way it's come out.

You can see more of my portraits here and if you would like me to create your very own family portrait, I'm accepting commissions at the moment. Please get in touch to discuss what you'd like.

There's something rather wonderful about watching the sun slowly sinking into the sea.
This image of the golden sun, bleeding into the inky ocean, is a scene from Camps Bay, which is located just south of the bustling city of Cape Town. The beautiful white sand beach faces west, looking out over the South Atlantic Ocean and behind it is the ribbon of mountains known as the Twelve Apostles. A peaceful place in the evening, beyond the posh seafood restaurants, mellow cafes and cocktail bars that characterise this prosperous suburb.

Basotho Herdsman and the importance of blankets

10/10/2021

Here we see a young man wearing the distinctive form of woollen blanket commonly worn by Sotho people in Lesotho and South Africa. Originally gifted to the then ruler of Lesotho, King Moshoeshoe I by a British man known only as "Mr Howell" in the late 19th century, these blankets quickly gained popularity in the Lesotho region. The way that Basotho men wear these traditional blankets is based on the traditional kaross, an animal skin cloak.

A variety of blankets are worn by the people of Lesotho to represent the different rites of passage in society. For example, the Moholobela is worn by young Sotho men in preparation of their transition to manhood. After the initiation ceremony, young men will don a different blanket known as the Lekhokolo, which confirms that they have reached adulthood.
