Nelson Mandela and Freedom Day in South Africa

Yesterday South Africa celebrated Freedom Day, commemorating the first time every South African citizen was given a vote. These first democratic elections were held 25 years ago on 27th April 1994. A staggering 19.7m of the 22.7m eligible voters showed up at the polls to make their votes count in South Africa’s first non-racial election. The presidential candidate for that first election was the iconic Nelson Mandela, who is widely credited for brokering the peaceful transition of power in the country.

Here he is in all his glory! You can read more about the great man here.

Rock Kestrel

Picture
Rock kestrels are the most common of the small Falconidaes in southern Africa, and although commonly seen in the dry semi-arid to arid areas, they are most often seen in rocky mountainous habitat. You may see this little kestrel perched up on electricity poles along the roadside, where it’ll be looking for any unsuspecting prey walking past on the ground below; If there is no tall object to perch on, they will ‘create their own’ by hovering in the air to inspect the ground below. If they happen to see a tasty morsel they will parachute down holding both of their wings back behind their back to enable them to drop at a greater speed. Prey is caught on the ground and they feed mainly on small mammals, birds, insects and reptiles.

The Black Breasted Snake Eagle

Picture
These nomadic eagles hunts mainly on the wing and can be seen hovering above the grassland or often above the smoke of grass fires waiting to catch prey disturbed from the flames. On seeing a snake they parachute down with claws extended in various stages from a height of between 30 and 90 metres. They can catch 1.8m long cobras, puffadders, boomslangs and even leguaans. Larger snakes are killed and eaten immediately on the ground, but smaller snakes are carried into the air and swallowed after being crushed in their strong talons.

The African Leopard

Picture
Leopards are the least social - and perhaps the most beautiful - of the African big cats. They usually keep to themselves, lurking in dense riverine bush or around rocky koppies, emerging to hunt late in the afternoon or at night.

The leopard is a graceful animal with an elongated body, relatively short legs and a long tail. After the lion, it is the next-biggest African cat. Leopards in the wild may live up to 15 years. Unlike the lion, the leopard is a silent creature, only occasionally emitting a cough-like call.
