Images of Old Cape Town: The Old Town House

Picture
The Old Town House was built in Cape Town in 1755 under Governor Rijk Tulbagh as Cape Town’s first public building.  Located in the heart of the city on Greenmarket Square, the early Rococo-style building has served as a police station, magistrate’s court, a Burgher Watch House, the Burgher Senate and until 1905, Cape Town’s City Hall. In 1914 the Old Town House became the city's first art museum. The building has been used for corporate meetings and receptions and the beautiful courtyard for film shoots, wedding photographs and outdoor receptions.

'Caught Napping' is a portrait I completed a few years ago. It captures a little slice of ordinary life: a man relaxing at the harbour side after a long morning's work. So peaceful in that moment, resting his eyes in the noon day sunshine.

White Tiger

Beautiful, isn't he? Unusually for me, this isn't an African animal.

The white tiger or bleached tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger, native to parts of the Indian Subcontinent. This mutation is so rare that it is estimated that only one in every 10,000 tigers born in the wild is white. Therefore, white tigers are only found in captivity.

A Pink Protea for Women's Day SA

Picture
A pink protea - a strong and beautiful flower - for Women's Day in South Africa today, 9th August.

On this day in 1956, more than 20,000 South African women of all races staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria in protest against the 'pass laws' that required South Africans defined as 'black' to carry a pass as part of the enforcement of racial segregation, the control of urbanization, and the management of migrant labour during the apartheid era.

The women stood silently for 30 minutes and then started singing a protest song that was composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint'Abafazi Wathint'imbokodo! (Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.).
In the years since, its latest incarnation: 'you strike a woman, you strike a rock', has come to represent
women's courage and strength in South Africa.

National Women's Day draws attention to significant issues African women still face, such as domestic violence, sexual harassment in the workplace, unequal pay, and schooling for all girls. It based around much of the same principles as International Women's Day, and strives for many of the same freedoms and rights.

Eaton Place, District Six, Cape Town

Picture
District Six was named the sixth district of Cape Town in 1867. Originally established as a community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants, the area had close links both to the city and the port.
It grew to become a lively, but impoverished community of 55 000 mostly coloured people. At one time known as the soul of Cape Town, this inner-city area had a rich cultural life in its narrow alleys and crowded tenements.
Much of the area was demolished during the 1960s and 70s, although now there are plans to redevelop the area.
