The architectural character of the Malay Quarter (or Bo Kaap) started emerging during the period of 1790 and 1840. The entrances to the houses are elevated from the streets. Every house would have at least a narrow 'stoep' at the front of the house, elevated from the street and built up from solid bricks. The stoep would be used for a variety of purposes, not least being a place where family and friends could meet and socialize.
'Pentz Street Malay Quarter (1950)' is one of my most recent images. It is one of three which have been selected for the South African Artists' Annual Merit Exhibition, which opens in Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town tomorrow evening at 18:30. The exhibition runs daily until Thursday 10th October.
All my works are available as high quality prints on non-archival paper or on stretched canvas.
