It has been such a delight to work on this beautiful owl image. Quite a challenge too, to get the texture of the feathers and the depth and detail of those wonderful yellow eyes. But I'm very pleased with the outcome. Imagine this as a large canvas print, gazing down at you from your wall!

Mandela Day 2021

“Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lies defeat and death.” Nelson Mandela, from his autobiography, A Long Walk to Freedom.

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), a world-wide iconic figure, and one of my best loved images. Today is the 103nd anniversary of his birth on 18th July. South Africans have commemorated his life as Mandela Day since 2009, remembering  his achievements in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, human rights, peace, and reconciliation.

My scratchboard work was completed in 2002 and was based on a picture published in a local Afrikaans newspaper, which gave me permission to use their photograph as a reference. The original work has been on exhibition at a number of galleries in and around Cape Town and various prints have been made for retail.

The full range of prints is still available
through this website and for overseas customers prints and other lifestyle items featuring the image are available from Fine Art America.

Rheenendal Cottage in Knysna

Picture
This image is one of twelve new works that I've been busy with over the past few months: a representation of a piece of the past that still exists in rural Rheenendal.

The district of Rheenendal lies on the edge of the Knysna forest along the famous Garden Route, a 300km stretch which runs close to the coast of southern South Africa. It's a piece of blissful countryside and home to artists, nature lovers and skilled crafters. A beautiful river runs through Rheenendal, and you can sit on the banks and watch brightly coloured kingfishers dart into the clear waters to spear a fish, or a majestic fish eagle swoop down to collect larger prey. The area consists of pastured land and fynbos, separated from the coastal towns in the Western Cape Province by almost untouched forests.

Gympie Street, Woodstock, Cape Town

About Woodstock
Once a small fishing hamlet, Woodstock began life as Papendorp in the mid-1800s, before land reclamation in the 1950s destroyed the magnificent Woodstock Beach. With the increasing English influence after the British occupation of the Cape, the name was changed to the more Anglicized New Brighton before finally becoming Woodstock. But the British influence remains strong in the road names, such as Victoria and Albert, and the rows of brick terraced and semi-detached houses that would not be out of place in an English town. Sadly the area fell into poverty and crime became rife. However, in recent years, the area has seen a revival with new retail, office and other commercial opportunities regenerating and gentrifying the area which still retains many beautiful old buildings which are now being restored.
